Global Voices Film Festival, presented by U.S. National Committee for UN Women, supports women producers, directors and writers, who are creating some of the most insightful and groundbreaking work in cinema today. The festival will showcase 10 new independent films—two feature-length films and eight shorts—produced, written and directed by women. Only 7% of the 250 highest grossing films in 2016 were directed by women and this event serves as a fundraiser to raise awareness for the UN Women. UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, which works to eliminate gender discrimination and achieve gender equality. The Global Voices Film Festival will donate net profits to fund UN Women’s life-changing global programs and initiatives.
