Ocarinas (closed-vessel ceramic flutes) have a history that dates back 12,000 years. Ocarinas were popular in pre-Colombian and ancient Chinese cultures, became a European ensemble instrument in the 19th century, and appeared in the Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the 1990s. In this 3-session workshop, you will learn how to craft and tune your own clay ocarinas. On the second and third session, you'll glaze your ocarinas for raku and low fire electric firings.
Session 1: October 20
With help from your instructor, you will make and tune your first ocarina from clay slabs. These will be bisque-fired in preparation for the second class.
Session 2: October 27
Glaze your first ocarina in preparation for a raku firing in the third session. Then, continue honing your skills in making and fine-tuning new ocarinas.
Session 3: November 3
In this final meeting, your class will take part in a raku firing to finish the ocarinas from the first session. While the kiln is heating up, you'll glaze your second batch of ocarinas for a later firing in an electric kiln. You will take home your raku-fired ocarinas at the end of class, and we'll send you an email when the ocarinas glazed in the final session are fired and ready to pick up (1-2 weeks later).
Cost: $150 for Adult Community and Harvard Graduate students, $25 for Harvard College Undergraduate Students plus firing costs. Firing costs will be calculated at 4 cents per cubic inch; for those enrolled in a Fall 2023 course, cubic inches will be counted toward your allotment. Those not enrolled in a course will receive a bill for their firing costs at the end of the workshop. Note: This workshop does not include open studio access for those not enrolled in a Fall 2023 course.
A limited number of scholarships are available. We invite BIPOC, LGBTQIA and self-identified, marginalized people (disability, class, etc.) to apply. Scholarship applications will be reviewed up to one week prior to the workshop date. Apply for a scholarship using this form.
