For most of history, gays have been "invisible", and this has led to the ironic result that the halls of our major art museums are lined with countless art works with homoerotic content that has gone unnoticed (at least consciously) and unacknowledged.

Michelangelo_Cupid.jpgThis tour will explore the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, revealing hidden and not so hidden homoerotic subtexts in artistic treasures from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance to the masters of the 20th Century.  We'll learn about famous pieces, from Michelangelo's Cupid to Picasso's Gertrude Stein, as well as less-known artists and works that are often overlooked.  We'll explore fascinating forms and representations of homosexuality from non-Western cultures as well.  Whether you're straight or gay, you'll never look at the Met in quite the same way again!

Our tour guide, Andrew Lear, is a world authority on same-sex love in Ancient Greece.  He is the co-author of the definitive work on male-male love in Greek vase painting, Images of Ancient Greek Pederasty: Boys Were Their Gods.  He is also the President of Oscar Wilde Tours, the world's only gay history tour company.

The cost of the tour depends not only on Harvardwood membership (or non-membership), but also on whether you are a member of the Metropolitan Museum. The cost of the tour includes Museum admission.
