Featured Member Posting: VR Producer (AltspaceVR) - Redwood City, CA

The VR Producer will be responsible for developing, producing and collaborating with partners ranging from media companies, brands and personalities on VR events and productions. The VR Producer is a fast-paced, dynamic position wearing several different hats in terms of coordination, management, and execution of events. We're looking for a seasoned professional with 5+ years work experience who enjoys managing and growing relationships with partners, and is passionate about owning the full end-to-end of production projects from idea to execution.

AltspaceVR is a virtual reality software company building a new communication platform. It is now used by people in over 150 countries to share a variety of experiences and interact in the most natural and fulfilling way possible online. We are a relatively small (and thoughtfully growing) team of 37. To that end, our team looks for experienced, smart, and well-grounded individuals who: can thrive in an environment that is fast-paced but not brutally so; are bleeding-edge but well-versed in solid startup principles; are instinctively resourceful and independently driven but are also helpful team players; and who can bring to our friendly, funny table a new bag of tricks and skills to add to the team—making it stronger and more adroit than it was before they arrived. Our team members are likely to say that their contribution makes a difference and their thinking matters to their teammates and to the company’s leadership.

Hot off the press: The Seven Deadly Sins, an original anthology by Harvardwood Press

Get it while it's hot off the press! The first original anthology by Harvardwood Press, The Seven Deadly Sins, is now available for purchase in paperback and Kindle formats!

The Seven Deadly Sins, featuring poets and fiction writers from around the world, is a no-holds barred selection of writing on the darker parts of human nature, which we mostly try to repress or at least keep hidden. Our contributors delve into lust and revenge, gluttony and hate with gusto, allowing the reader to vicariously indulge in these "sins" without any consequences. Harvardwood Press is delighted to launch its imprint with this inaugural collection, with lots more to come.

The anthology was curated by Harvardwood Publishing Director Patricia Danaher, Nieman Fellow '05, with special thanks to Zoë Morrison AB '11 for copy-editing the final manuscript and to Susan Bin AB '16 for the amazing cover design (pictured).

Finally, we're officially launching The Seven Deadly Sins anthology at the Los Angeles Holly Jolly Jubilee on Dec. 7th! If you're in town that Wednesday evening and can join us at St. Felix Hollywood, come meet a few of our featured authors, chat with Harvardwood Publishing Director Patricia Danaher, and purchase a copy (or two or three!) of the anthology.

RISE TO THE FOUNDERS' CHALLENGE: Make a gift to Harvardwood

We know Harvardians love a good competition, so we’re throwing down the gauntlet and asking you to meet our first-ever Founders’ Challenge this winter! All you have to do is donate any amount to Harvardwood by the end of 2016—our goal is to achieve 100% participation from our members.

Harvardwood began in 1999 as an informal email list of Harvard alums working in the arts, media, and entertainment. Thanks to the vision, commitment, and tireless efforts of Harvardwood Founders Mia Riverton Alpert AB '99, Stacy Cohen AB '89, and Adam Fratto AB '90, Harvardwood has since exploded into a vibrant community with multiple chapters worldwide and an online database of 7,500+ Harvard-affiliated subscribers.

With your donation, we can continue to provide meaningful resources, educational programs, and professional events for our members globally. Crimson-level donors and above ($250+) will receive exclusive invitations to private Harvardwood events, but the focus of the Founders’ Challenge is participation, not amount.

So in honor of our Founders, invest in Harvardwood’s future
and participate in the Founders’ Challenge

AnsleyR.jpg

Since 2010, Harvardwood has identified and honored a volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to our organization. This year, we're excited to announce that the HARVY winner is Ansley Rubinstein AB '10! In addition to being a Harvardwood 101 alumna herself, Ansley has been integral to the continued success of Harvardwood 101 as Associate Director, and she has also served as AD of the Harvardwood Summer Internship Program. Thanks for being part of the Harvardwood Board and family, Ansley!

More about Ansley:

Ansley Rubinstein is an artist, traveler, and educator. She has starred as action leads and comedic characters in television and film, and she has been featured as a contemporary soloist in dance companies and festivals including Home Grown at the Bootleg, the Pasadena Dance Festival, and LA Unbound. Having spent three of her undergraduate summers writing for the travel guide Let's Go, Ansley continues to travel professionally and often works with student groups abroad - a gig that has led her to nine countries in 2016 alone. Most recently, she worked with the School of International Training on a semester-long program in Brazil, India, and Uganda, focusing on social entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and social justice. In addition to continuing her work with Harvardwood and as an actress and dancer in LA, Ansley is eager to explore ways of using art for social change and for addressing global issues of our time.

Where Are They Now? Q&A with Alexandra Zimbler AB '10 (VP of TV & Film Development, MAS Production)

by Henry Johnson AB '18

Alexandra Zimbler AB '10 is currently the VP of Film & TV Development at Michael Shamberg's MAS Production. She's also a Director and Producer whose short documentary Gisele et Georges won Best Short Documentary at the Independent Filmmakers Showcase. While a student at Harvard College, Alexandra was a VES concentrator and attended the Harvardwood 101 Wintersession program.

Q. What was your first step toward working in the industry?

A. During the summer after my junior year I interned at Sony Pictures in Los Angeles. This was my first contact with industry professionals. I learned a tremendous amount, largely due to a very supportive mentor, Stephanie Chang.

The internship helped in another more surprising way. Living in Culver City was key. I didn’t have a driver’s license at the time, so I rented a room from a nice family within walking distance from the studio lot. On weekends I explored the city by bus, which is not the typical tourist’s way of visiting LA. Before long I felt like a native. When I moved back post-college, I stayed in the motel that I used to pass on my bus route.

The next step was an intensive job search. I met with many Harvard alumni, such as Franklin Leonard AB ’00, who generously gave me the advice that led to my first job. The Harvard network is real and I am very grateful to the many alumni who found time to meet and counsel me.

Q. What does a typical workday look like for you?

A. I work at Michael Shamberg’s Production Company, MAS Production, and am responsible for development in film and TV. Every day is different. Once a week I’m at BuzzFeed Motion Pictures in Hollywood, where Michael is an advisor. The rest of my time is spent working on various TV and film projects. With many different projects at different stages of development, the best days include sitting down with writers and working on stories, brainstorming with my colleagues at MAS, and networking around town. A new idea can come from anywhere, so my antennae are always up, and I am constantly scanning the world for the next spark of inspiration.

Q. You’ve created a documentary short and also worked for a large production company. How would you compare those experiences?

A. The experiences were actually quite similar. You have to be entrepreneurial; a certain scrappiness and persistence is required to get any project done, whatever its style or size. At the end of the day, you want to tell the best story possible, and to surprise, entertain and possibly enlighten the audience. On the other hand, while “being my own boss” was nice, I seemed to learn more at a large company.

Q. How did Harvardwood 101 help you succeed in the industry?

A. Harvardwood 101 took me on my first trip to LA. It was an eye-opening tour. I had no idea what to expect, but was dazzled by the seemingly endless opportunities. We were introduced to all species of Hollywood life, meeting agents, managers, studio execs, producers, directors and writers. Networking with Harvard alums at various stages in their careers was also incredibly helpful. I found it easiest to relate to younger alums who were still hustling their way up the ladder, and could give me advice based on their recent experience.

More than anything, Harvardwood has helped me succeed by providing a constant source of support. When I moved to LA, I reached out to almost everyone that I met during Harvardwood 101. I set up phone calls and meetings, and was amazed at how willing alums were to help me, despite their busy schedules. These conversations guided me towards my first job in the industry. Today, many of the people I talked to are friends and even collaborators.

Alumni Profile: Lisa Joy Nolan JD '07 (Co-Creator & Executive Producer, Westworld)

by Brittany Turner AB '10

Lisa_JN.jpgFor Lisa Joy JD ‘07, co-creator of the smash hit HBO series Westworld (with her husband, screenwriter and director Jonathan Nolan), writing is, and has always been, a gamble. She jokes, “I went to law school and I still re-up my bar membership every year. I’m basically like, I don’t know when this could end!”

Despite her success, Joy still admits herself to be “risk-averse,” citing her circuitous path to a full-time writing career. Born in New Jersey, she studied English and Chinese at Stanford before working in business as a consultant and corporate strategist. After a few years, she attended Harvard Law School, writing screenplays in between classes; upon graduating, she returned to consulting for a short while before a smartly written spec episode of Veronica Mars landed her a first-time staff writing gig on ABC’s Pushing Daisies.

She notes that the conventional rites of passage facing a young, aspiring writer in Hollywood can be daunting, especially without the right tools—or access—starting out.

Joy had family obligations and student loans, which figured into her calculus for abstaining from a full-throated effort at writing for the first few years out of college.

“The typical path is to be a writer’s assistant for a long time—sometimes many many years—with uncertain chance of success. It wasn’t really tenable for me, and it concerns me in terms of the voices it funnels out. It preferences you, if you already come from money, if you already come from connections. And frankly, it preferences non-diverse voices in that sense.”

She continues, “Part of the reason I’m so risk-averse is because I didn’t have the luxury of being risky. And neither do a lot of people.”

Joy cherishes her nontraditional route into entertainment, noting the utility of her experience as fuel for the imagination—which comes in handy when staring down an imposing blank page. “You spend some time in the real world,” she says. “You’re taking all of the ideas that you’ve soaked up in your real life and fashioning them into stories.”

Since her start on Pushing Daisies, Joy has written and co-produced Burn Notice on USA and sold a script based off of her graphic novel Headache to Fox in 2012. Her sci-fi feature film screenplay Reminiscence, about a futuristic archeologist who helps his clients revive and experience old memories, made The Black List in 2013; after a fierce bidding war between studios, Legendary reportedly paid over $1.75 million for the script, making it one of the biggest screenplay deals of that year.

westworld.jpg But perhaps one of Joy’s most impressive accomplishments to date is her work as co-showrunner on the expansive sci-fi television thriller Westworld, based off of the classic 1973 film written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton AB '64, MD '69. The show currently enjoys a coveted spot on HBO’s fall Sunday night lineup, and is frequently referred to as the premium network’s “next Game of Thrones.”

The show, which has already been renewed for a second season as of November, centers on Westworld, a highly technologically advanced Western-themed amusement park for the wealthy, where guests can carouse and make mayhem to their heart’s content. The park is populated by androids called “hosts.” The show examines the lives of the hosts—and the philosophical quandaries that arise when they begin to question the nature of their reality.

Westworld’s striking dialogue and crisp plotting aside, Joy firmly acknowledges that TV is a business—and that showrunning is not for the faint of heart.

“Typically, you write something and it’s this…gentle and intellectual process. But then you make a show. And that’s when you roll up your sleeves and dive in. I’m lucky enough to have an amazing director and co-showrunner who I’m also married to, so we were in the trenches together on this.”

Still, writing the show’s characters—heroes and villains—can be the trickiest part of the whole enterprise. Especially when the writers don't always agree with their actions.

The show paints the guests at Westworld as careless, rapacious, and singularly driven by the pursuit of pleasure, since there are apparently no consequences to reap inside the park itself; guests visit in order to live out explicit fantasies, however deranged they may be. Accordingly, Westworld frequently explores themes of violence and sexuality—often intertwined, and sometimes portrayed graphically onscreen. But Joy insists against gratuitousness for its own sake.

“There are actions this season that I find hard to watch,” she says, “but honestly, I find life difficult to watch sometimes. It’s hard not to look at the issues that trouble me in fiction because they trouble me in life. Because fiction is a way of working through them and processing them for me.”

dolores.jpgJoy recounts hearing many similarly troubling stories during her brief tenure working in the Family Violence division of the District Attorney’s office while starting her legal career. She remarks on the imprint that experience left on her: “I saw a lot of darkness in those stories, and I don’t think that darkness leaves you. And I think if you’re awake and going through life—especially as a woman or person of color—you see parts of the world that other people might not see, because the world shows you different sides of itself… sides that it feels like it can show you with impunity, because you’re not part of a classical power structure.”

By focusing on two of the show’s most vulnerable characters at the beginning of the story—Maeve, a brothel manager, and Dolores, a traditional damsel-in-distress type—Westworld subverts the traditionally Western trope of centering on a rugged, solo frontiersman out for revenge. Was concentrating on the awakenings of these two android women—one a person of color, both often the objects of violence in the park— meant as commentary on the real-life experiences of women and people of color?

“People that aren’t in positions in power see the darkness of their world seeping in more. They have to see it, in order to survive. They have to prepare for it. So what does it mean when your consciousness is in high alert in that respect? Because of your position in society? Does that change you? Does that make you more perceptive?”

It’s one of the central questions of the narrative.

maeve.jpgShe continues, “Creatively, just as we’re subverting the film by looking at it from the robots’ POV, I wanted to… jar things from the start and build a connection to people that we often overlook. Maeve and Dolores are outsiders in the traditional Western story. But not in this one.”

Mind-bending, complex themes, an all-star cast, and spectacular cinematography make it clear that Westworld is trending toward monumental success, and Joy credits her husband and co-showrunner, as well as the rest of her talented staff, as elemental to that status. Her advice to fledgling writers who want to follow in her footsteps is straightforward:

“Employ yourself and write a script. If it doesn’t get the outcome you want, then employ yourself again. Be a good boss to yourself, and keep giving yourself chances to write. Don’t try to write in someone else’s voice—try to be you.”

Also? Embrace fear, change, and the unknown. It might enrich you more than you think. Joy learned that lesson while pregnant with her first child, a period which lent itself to fervent creativity.

“Sometimes the biggest points of fear are the most liberating moments. It’s pretty hard to get staffed when you look super pregnant, and shows are super demanding. And I had well-meaning people tell me—well, this is probably it, you know. So I gave into fear and unemployment… it ended up being the most transformative nine months of my life. Because the first trimester I finally just sat down and wrote my first feature (Reminiscence). That sold my second trimester. Around the same time that it sold, we went to HBO with Westworld, and that started going.”

Next on her radar? Directing a few next-season episodes of Westworld, and writing a film adaptation of the much-beloved Battlestar Galactica television show for Universal. And for now, she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

“Writing in itself is the journey, and it’s a cruel, cruel love sometimes because it doesn’t always love you back. To have an abiding passion like that, an abiding love, even if it’s unreciprocated at times…it's an incredible blessing.”Brittany_Turner.png

The film traces Dr. Hurwitz’s trial and eventual appeal, detailing the events that lead to his arrest. Testimonies from the witnesses in Dr. Hurwitz’s case contradict one another—some revere him, while others condemn him.
