The Harvardwood Summer Internship Program is kicking off early next month, and it offers two great opportunities for alumni members, especially those in Los Angeles, to get INVOLVED with Harvardwood! What's an easy way to get a year of free Harvardwood membership? Host an intern this summer in Los Angeles or New York!

Harvardwood seeks accommodations hosts for the 2015 Harvardwood Summer Internship Program (HSIP) participants. The HSIP provides a list of summer internship opportunities in the arts, media, and entertainment to interested Harvard students. Because several of these internships are unpaid, many HSIP participants are in need of free or discounted accommodations to help defray the costs of accepting these opportunities. 

So if you have a spare couch, futon, sleeping bag, or room(s) you can provide to a student or students (either free or discounted) for an extended period of time this summer (most internships run from mid-June to early August), complete this brief form. In addition to our undying gratitude, you will receive a free year of Full Membership to Harvardwood and you will be invited to attend special HSIP activities. Hosts are NOT expected to provide transportation, meals, entertainment, etc.

You do not have to have an internship that was listed on the HSIP list of opportunities. All summer interns affiliated with Harvard University can participate! In addition to being eligible for all HSIP activities, you will also have the opportunity to enter our HSIP housing lottery for the summer—just make sure you sign up by May 15th to be eligible. If you sign up after that date, you can still participate in HSIP this summer, but you will not be considered for the housing lottery. If you have any questions, get in touch!

Harvardwood is looking for an energetic volunteer to assist the Harvardwood Summer Internship Program Director in producing this career development program for current Harvard students. This summer, the volunteer will coordinate career-related activities throughout the summer for participating students and companies in NYC and LA (and/or other cities in which there is critical mass). This is a great stepping stone for a recent graduate who is interested in building up his/her professional network and joining the Harvardwood Board of Directors in future.

Every year, Harvardwood hosts a mixer during Harvard's Commencement/Reunion Weekend. On Friday, May 29th, members of Harvardwood's Boston/On-Campus Chapter and visitors returning to Cambridge for Reunions will gather at Charlie's Kitchen, the Harvard Square institution, to meet and mingle from 2-4pm in the afternoon. The Harvardwood Writers Program - TV (NYC) invites you to a reading of three sitcom pilots written by emerging writers from the HWP Fall 2014 TV Writing Module: Anusha Deshpande, Hillary Berkowitz Nussbaum, and Ying Li. A cast of actors will bring to life this trio of original scripts, each of which offers up its own comedic take on themes of friendship, self-discovery, and life in NYC. Industry Successes

Harvardwood extends a hearty congratulations to Rich Battista MBA '90, who was named President of People and Entertainment Weekly, as well as Executive Vice President of Time Inc. last month.

Paula Brancato has been awarded the Tampa Review's 2015 Danahy Fiction Prize for her short story "Executive Spa." She has also been awarded the 2015 Booth Poetry Prize for her poem "The only time I ever cried at the gym."

Mark Saltveit '83 appeared on ESPN SportsCenter discussing his upcoming book Controlled Chaos: Chip Kelly's Football Revolution, which comes out in July from Diversion Books. Meanwhile, a documentary film on Saltveit's World Palindrome Championship was released, and the filmmaker completed a kickstarter campaign to expand it into a feature film culminating in March, 2017's World Palindrome Championship II.

The Furuya Sisters performed the very last concert held at Steinway Hall last November and released a live concert DVD and CD entitled “Furuya Sisters Live at Steinway Hall: Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Kreisler Piano Trios.” The Furuya Sisters Trio operates their own concert series in the Tri State Area of NY/CT/NJ. Their current Spring 2015 Season features Tchaikovsky and Mozart Piano Trios. Their still-upcoming concerts include May 9th, Saturday in Nyack, NY; May 15th, Friday in South Salem, NY; June 5th, Friday at The National Opera Center in New York City; and June 27th, Saturday in Paramus, NJ. They have received superlative accolades from Hollywood legends like Joan Fontaine, Olivia de Havilland and Kirk Douglas; from historic pianists like Alicia De Larrocha, Gyorgy Sandor, and Damon Denton; and from international figures like Jacques Chirac, King of Spain Don Juan Carlos, and Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh. Profile: Dan Goor '97 (Co-Creator, Executive Producer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

“When I went to college I wanted to be a doctor and a comedian—like my idol Jonathan Miller, from the British comedy revue Beyond the Fringe.” 

Dan’s twin interests can be traced back to his upbringing in Bethesda, Maryland down the street from the National Institutes of Health.  “I’ve always been very interested in science and molecular biology,” he says.  “I grew up with it—my Dad and everyone around us worked at NIH. Scientists describe what they do as stories, and I think that fostered my fascination with storytelling.”

His appetite for comedy emerged early. “My brother was a really talented pianist--he’s four years older. While he’d practice, I’d read Woody Allen short stories to him. We got hold of a video camera and spent hours making up sketch comedy routines and cracking each other up. We imitated what made us laugh on TV--Saturday Night Live, Monty Python, televangelists...”

His brother enrolled in Juilliard’s pre-college program and went to high school at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn Heights. “I was exceptionally jealous,” Dan admits.  Four years later, Dan, 14, had the same chance to board with a family and attend Saint Ann’s. He didn’t hesitate. “I lived on the top floor of the family’s brownstone and there were very few rules.” He did a lot of comedy and improvisation at Saint Ann’s, but most of his writing was serious. “I think I was scared to try to write something funny and then have it not be funny.”

Although Dan entered Harvard with a concentration in biochemistry, he didn’t see it as a career steppingstone. “I wanted to treat college as an end in itself. I was fortunate to have this wonderful oasis where my job was to learn and also to do extra-curricular activities with cool, interesting people” like his friends Charlie Grandy ‘97 and Mike Schur ’97. 

Dan appeared in nine Harvard-Radcliffe Dramatic Club productions as well as experimental, improvisational and movement-based theater while at Harvard. As a senior, he received the Jonathan Levy Prize as the most promising actor at the University (“I think there was a sampling error.”) He was bound for medical school when he was invited to apply for an Eliot House travel grant. “At the end of a year of traveling around the world, I still intended to go to medical school but very much hoped it wouldn’t happen.”

During that year, his friends Charlie and Mike were writing in New York, Mike at Saturday Night Live. “Charlie had been my college writing partner,” Dan says. “When I got back from my year abroad I had four weeks before med school started. I asked Charlie if I could join him in preparing a [writing sample] packet for Saturday Night Live. It was truly a terrible packet.” Fortunately they learned The Daily Show had openings.  “We wrote three pages of jokes and two weeks later we were hired there.”

After three years at The Daily Show, Charlie and Dan went their separate ways. “I made a conscious decision to stay in New York. Naively, I didn’t understand that for every opportunity in New York there were fifty in Los Angeles.”

After a year on Last Call with Carson Daly, Dan went on staff at Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “The show was very writer-driven and even junior writers got to produce the pieces they wrote. On top of that, we were doing 180 episodes a year so it was a great training ground.”

After four years, Dan wanted to write longer-form comedy. He moved to L.A. to work on an untitled new show created by Mike Schur with Greg Daniels ’85. He started out by spending several months at The Office. “It was a wonderful apprenticeship in an all-star writers’ room,” Dan says. “I learned the Mike Schur-Greg Daniels vocabulary for breaking stories.”

The new show was Parks and Recreation; by the end of the second season Dan was largely running the room when Mike wasn’t there. “Mike and I had a shorthand partly because of The Office and partly because we’d known each other since our time doing plays in college.” Dan became an Executive Producer on Parks and Recreation in 2012.

During the show’s third season, Dan wrote Family Practice, a comedy series pilot that wasn’t picked up. During the fifth season, Dan recalls, “Mike said ‘hey, if you’re thinking about writing a new show, I’d like to do it with you.’ Very quickly we got onto the idea for a comedy about a detective squad in an outer borough NYPD police station.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a skilled detective and prankster as he clashes with his by-the-book commanding officer (Andre Braugher). The show has been praised for its wit, originality and outstanding ensemble cast.

“Our amazing casting director Allison Jones not only found people who met our character descriptions, she also introduced us to the funniest, best people she knew,” Dan says. “When we met with Andy Samberg he immediately understood who the lead character was—‘a Comedy McNulty from The Wire.’

“We’d talked to Andre Braugher on Skype but hadn’t heard him read a word of our writing. At the table read, the first time he opened his mouth, everyone laughed. That was when I finally relaxed and thought “this could really work.”

The show not only worked, it scored a major upset its first season by beating Big Bang Theory, Girls, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation to win the 2014 Golden Globe as best TV comedy. (Andy Samberg won as best TV comedy actor.)

“If you watch the season two finale—and you should—you’ll be excited for season three,” Dan says. “I know I am.” As for his post-Brooklyn Nine-Nine plans? “I’d like to write another show, or write a movie. But a long period of hibernation first would be nice.”

Asked whether he has any advice for aspiring TV comedy writers, Dan offers the following:

“Write all the time. Rewrite. Edit. Watch a ton of comedy. Make comedy videos with like-minded people and put them on the web--they could become your calling card.

“It’s not necessary, but I think it’s useful to perform. Do improv to learn how to say ‘yes’ to other people’s ideas and not be precious about your own.

“Finally, when you’re trying to develop stories, take off your critic’s hat and just write.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s season two finale is Sunday, May 17th at 8:30 pm/7:30 pm Central on Fox.

Harvardwood Heads To... SCI-FEST LA: The Los Angeles Science Fiction One-Act Play Festival - Thursday, May 7th

Sci-Fest LA is the only festival of its kind on the planet. Unlike the "cons" or fan gatherings, Sci-Fest LA is passionately dedicated to the creation of NEW Sci-Fi content. This year, in addition to our stage shows, we have initiated two new Sci-Fi short fiction contests: THE ROSWELL AWARD (for adult Sci-Fi writers from around the globe) and THE TOMORROW PRIZE (for LA County High School Students). Harvardwood Heads To... The 2015 HCSC Annual Dinner and Awards - Sunday, May 31st

The intrigue, the suspense . . . Who is behind that gold masque? Could it be a classmate from your days at Harvard, a current colleague? You’ll never know until you come to the annual Harvard Club award dinner. This year the dinner will be like no other. Come in your favorite disguise as the theme is “Masquerade.” That’s right, wear your favorite masque to the gala, and have fun figuring out who that mystery person is. Dressing in disguise is optional. The BELLE of BELFAST by Nate Rufus Edelman, directed by Claudia Weill '69, is running through June 7th at the DR2 theatre off Union Square in NY, a production of The Irish Repertory Theatre. In 1985 Belfast, Anne Malloy drinks and smokes her days away with her curry chip-addicted best mate. But when she turns for comfort to her parish priest, she discovers her troubles have just begun. Harvardwood Heads To... Furuya Sisters Perform Tchaikovsky and Mozart in Nyack Carnegie Room - Saturday, May 9th

Andrew Carnegie—with whose gift the Nyack Library Carnegie Room was built in 1903—invited Tchaikovsky to the USA to open Carnegie Hall in May 1891. Tchaikovsky was amazed at his popularity in the US: “I am convinced that I am ten times more famous in America than in Europe” (April 30, 1891). About Andrew Carnegie, Tchaikovsky wrote: “This arch-millionaire is very kind to me, and constantly talks of an engagement for next year…” (May 8, 1891). Experience all this history vicariously with many nice people at the Furuya Sisters' performance of great classical works in Nyack!

Harvardwood Presents IN PLAIN SIGHT: Homoerotic Art in the Collection of the Metropolitan Museum - Sunday, May 17th

For most of history, gays have been "invisible", and this has led to the ironic result that the halls of our major art museums are lined with countless art works with homoerotic content that has gone unnoticed (at least consciously) and unacknowledged. This tour will explore the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, revealing hidden and not so hidden homoerotic subtexts in artistic treasures from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance to the masters of the 20th Century. We'll learn about famous pieces, from Michelangelo's Cupid to Picasso's Gertrude Stein, as well as less-known artists and works that are often overlooked. We'll explore fascinating forms and representations of homosexuality from non-Western cultures as well. Whether you're straight or gay, you'll never look at the Met in quite the same way again!
