Q&A with Vanessa Parise, Harvard College, Magna Cum Laude - Director of #POPFAN (airs this weekend on Lifetime)

By Sara Wright

What attracted you to #POPFAN?Parise_Vanessa_2.jpg

Lisa Hamilton Daly, a really smart, accomplished executive at Lifetime, brought the project to me to direct. When I read the script, I could immediately visualize the style I wanted to shoot. I saw pockets of practical light with bits of scenes disappearing into the shadows, and moving cameras shooting through layers of depth as we revealed the characters.

One of Lifetime’s goals is to bring in the twenty-something audience, so this film could be edgy – visually and thematically dark. The script also had very challenging acting roles for the actors. One of my strengths as a director is working with actors, so I love complex roles that actors can really dig into – characters I want to keep watching.

What resonated with you thematically about this project?

The false closeness we feel to celebrities because of social media is really interesting to me. In the movie, an obsessed fan [Nolan Funk] feels like this celebrity [Chelsea Kane] should perform her sexy music video for him because he’s watched it in private, feeling like he’s with her. But, of course, the closeness he feels is not real.

Your lead actor, Chelsea Kane, has said you had her write letters with her deepest, darkest secrets. Did you use these working with Chelsea on set?

I did! I feel like part of my responsibility as a director is to determine how each actor works and then to be there to not only guide the performance but also provide a safe environment in which actors can be vulnerable and takes risks. Chelsea and I charted her character’s progression throughout the movie and worked together to find personal choices that would bring her emotionally to each scene. She was awesome… very brave – she wrote deep, revelatory letters for each choice. I brought those letters to set with me, so I knew what to use to help her (I made sure to keep them close; they were very private!). I think the best performances come when the audience doesn’t know what the actor is going to do next because the actor doesn’t even know – it’s that real.

Where did you shoot and what was the timeline?

We shot the exterior lighthouse and the NYC scenes on Vancouver Island. The interior of the lighthouse was shot at a different location on the mainland – I hope you can’t tell? For me, it was a three week prep and three week shoot.

A lot different from the indie feature world, huh?

Definitely. Starting out, I wrote, directed and produced [and acted in] two features. I’d have to write the scripts, raise the money, prep the movie, shoot the movie, get it out to festivals, and sell the movie. And then do publicity! Each of my features took three years of never-ending, uber-challenging work. The television world is so much faster. I love it!

So it’s been a couple of years in the TV world? What have you done in TV so far?

I’ve sold a script to ABCF, set up a pitch at ABCS, and wrote a freelance episode of a Hallmark show called When Calls the Heart. And I’ve directed four television movies. It’s so different and fun to be able to jump in, be creative, and jump out again... and not have to deal with all the business of it.

How has your experience in the indie film world helped you direct TV?

I already know every step of the process. I know a lot about every crew job, since I’ve had to do most of them at some point. [laughing] I also know what every line item is, how much things should cost, how much each department can spend, how to negotiate every deal… and how critical it is to stay on time and on budget. Everything from development all the way through publicity. I’m so happy to have done all that. But I’m also very grateful that now other people are doing those other jobs really well and I can just focus on directing!

You’ve worked with a lot of very well-respected actors, including Alyssa Milano, Taryn Manning, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Johnathan Schaech, and Shelley Long. And you seem to develop a close bond with them. Is this because you were an actor yourself? And what made you turn from Harvard Medical School to acting to directing?

Parise_Vanessa_1.jpgYes, I’ve been honored to work with so many talented actors and I do develop particularly close relationships with them. I started acting when I was really young. But I also loved math and science – problem-solving. When I got into med school, I was at a crossroads. I deferred and went to NYC’s Circle in the Square Acting Conservatory. Then I moved to LA to be an actress. I hated sitting around waiting for auditions (yes, I’m type A!) so I jumped straight into making my first feature, Kiss the Bride [which Parise sold to MGM]. I still love the creative process just as much as I did on my first one – bringing a group of super-talented people who are all experts in their fields together to make something that is bigger than any of us could do individually. And I finally not so long ago turned down med school.

What’s next?

Today (!) I’m handing in the second draft of a television movie Luke Perry is directing for the Up network called Demo Girl — about a girl who has to enter a demo derby competition to pay for Harvard. I’m in talks to direct my next MOW. I’m also excited to be getting into episodic directing. I’m looking to direct a medical drama. (Half-kidding!)

Any advice you have for aspiring directors?

Do it as much as you can. You get better every single time. Especially now, if you’re starting out, you can do micro-budget movies at home and build up your experience that way. However you can, just do it!

Anything else you want to add?

A big thanks to Mia Riverton Alpert and the Harvardwood community for always being supportive. I’m so grateful. And for those of you I don’t know yet, I look forward to meeting you someday – hopefully soon!

YOUR votes are in, and you've selected the winner of the 2014 Harvardwood Karaoke Contest! CONGRATULATIONS TO KAFUI ADJAYA-GBEWONYO, who did a great karaoke rendition of "Is This Love?" by Bob Marley. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLjqoTZE-uM

Robin Russin's '79 new play, THE FACE IN THE REEDS, premiered Aug. 22nd at the Ruskin Group Theatre in Santa Monica and will run through October. THE FACE IN THE REEDS is about a family gathered to celebrate a Passover dinner. During the course of the evening, conflicts emerge about the value of faith, over conversion, about the truth or falsity of religion, and the nature of parental responsibility. "Why is this night different from all other nights?" Because while Passover is a celebration of freedom, it is also a quarrel about the meaning of freedom, the value of life, guilt about the past, and the shadow of death which symbolically "passes over" their house. And of course, this being a Jewish family, it is also a comedy. We're all going to die, but first, "Let's eat!" Check it out here.

Tinker Lindsay's '74 HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS, starring Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Jean Reno and Stellan Skarsgaard, co-written with director Peter Chelsom, has its North American premiere September 7th at the Toronto Film Festival. Distributed by Relativity Entertainment, the film opens in Los Angeles and New York on September 19th, with a wide release following on October 3, 2014. In unrelated but also exciting news, Hay House Publishing has just ordered THE FIFTH RULE OF TEN, the latest installment of Gay Hendricks and Tinker Lindsay's detective mystery series featuring Tenzing Norbu, an ex-Tibetan monk / ex-LAPD cop who struggles to be a mindful Private Investigator while encountering murder and mayhem in the City of Angels.

Member Profile: Broderick Fox '96 (THE SKIN I'M IN, ZEN & THE ART OF DYING)

by Terence O'Toole Murnin

BRODERICK_FOX.jpgAfter boldly tackling the cultural shame of gender, sexuality, addition, body dysmorphia, fantasy, and illness, Broderick Fox '96 takes on the ultimate taboo in ZEN AND THE ART OF DYING.

On a daily basis, Broderick Fox ('96, Lowell House) readily admits that he has the same doubts and fears as any human being. But when it’s time to get down to work, Fox never flinches from the tough issues that many people don’t want to talk about: Taboo and shame. Physical body dysmorphia. Alcoholism, gender and sexuality. This fearless auteur tackles some of our planet’s most difficult subjects with an artistic, poetic approach to visual storytelling.

“People feel like they know me,” laughs Fox, and if you’ve seen THE SKIN I’M IN (2012), you’ll know why (http://skiniminmovie.com/). The film garnered critical buzz, winning a Juror’s Pick at the Victoria International Film Festival and a Best Documentary Score Finalist at the Park City Film Music Festival – and enjoyed a festival run spanning 18 cities and 11 countries. Fox shot the ultimate “selfie,” which beautifully blossomed into five now legendary characters: Brody – Son & brother; Dr. Fox – the Professor; Broderick Fox – the Artist; Rick – the Queer Club Kid; and Dina Brown – Drag Queen.

“I felt a need to run with my notions of sexuality, identity, and spirit,” relates FOX, “and THE SKIN I’M IN autobiography was a great way to get at tough issues. I was able to actually show people what it’s like, and I went there myself, fully vulnerable and sometimes ugly, but without sensationalism.”

In a serendipitous twist of fate, Fox was at the Byron Bay (Australia) International Film Festival for the world premiere of THE SKIN I’M IN when he met Zenith Virago, an activist and educator who for over 20 years has been returning this coastal region to a more communal, celebratory, and creative engagement with death and dying. The proverbial muse was now actually speaking directly to the artist and the feature-length documentary, ZEN & THE ART OF DYING was on that day conceived. Originally a young mother in Great Britain, and now, a lesbian, feminist, and self-described death-walker, Zenith Virago had found a kindred spirit in Fox, and she offered him unprecedented access into intimate experiences that delicately challenge our core assumptions about life – and shatter our taboos about death. Needless to say, Fox jumped at the chance.

Fox_Virago.jpg“This new documentary represents a huge shift for me,” notes Fox. “It had been a while, and it was nice to have the camera on someone else. At the same time, I also felt tremendous pressure to do these stories justice. Zenith Virago and the community of Byron Bay, Australia were allowing me to chronicle intensely personal moments of death on camera with an unheard level of access. It was a leap of faith on both sides, and I had to get it right.”

As an Associate Professor of Media Arts & Culture at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Fox had researched and performed some critical writing on people using commercial technologies to manage pain, creating autobiographical video to document their own death. Then suddenly, Fox and his partner, Executive Producer Lee Biolos were living among the community of a renowned death-walker, delicately recording family-oriented death care traditions that were progressively lost to Western culture over the last century.

“Zenith was transforming a community. She’s an iconoclast and a one-of-a-kind character whose personal life informs her practice, and I knew immediately that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” beams Fox.

For six weeks, the small footprint of Fox shooting on a Panasonic HMC 150 Camcorder, while Biolos captured sound were allowed access to some incredibly humbling and inspiring moments, including a fifty-sixth birthday party – a living wake – and the funeral of a 25-year-old.

“As I tell my students, you don’t need massive budgets and specialized equipment to make meaningful work,” relates Fox. “We stayed small on this one and captured some very incredible moments.”

Fox’s own journey to Byron Bay began at Harvard where he “caught the bug” in regard to making media, and he has been telling complex narratives ever since. Originally working on marine biology research, Fox ultimately merged his love of all things phenomenological and narrative into a special concentration in the Visual & Environmental Studies department where he created science documentaries.

“I have always loved shark movies (SHARK WEEK/SHARKNADO!) where spectacle and entertainment are couched in a scientific narrative,” laughs Fox.

From there, Fox went on to do his graduate work at USC, a place where most of his classmates were focused on making big, very commercial movies. Fox, however, remained true to his vision, creating smaller-driven narratives and singular characters on their own hero’s journey, hopefully inspiring audiences to reflect on their own lives.”

“Okay, I know what you’re thinking,” smiles Fox. “A film about death is going to be heavy and morbidly sensationalized, but I can assure you, ZEN & THE ART OF DYING is not earnest or boring. I think it will surprise people.”

Fox engages with Zenith Virago as a person with incredible humor, someone who transforms her community in the roles of Queer, Feminist, Death-Walker, and Activist from beginning (Sexuality is the original Genesis) to the end, where death is looked at with a fresh new perspective.

“At the very least, I hope it makes people think about ‘doing death differently,’” intones a confident Fox. “Do you have an advanced directive and will? What do you want done with your body? Why are you scared?”

Picture editing on ZEN & THE ART OF DYING is finished, and Fox and his team are almost at the finish line, completing the final phases of post-production (sound design, music, color correction, mixing and mastering) in anticipation of the 2015 festival season. Fox was one of 12 California artists awarded a 2014 Artistic Innovation Grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation in support of the film. He has also taken a very “kick-starter” approach to funding this project, and visitors to the film’s website can make donations towards its completion, and any contributions to the documentary are tax deductible here in the U.S. and in Australia through the film’s fiscal sponsors.

Original music is now also being created by Ronit Kirchman (Yale ’95) who Fox also worked with on THE SKIN I’M IN.

“Human nature is such a powerful character – ashes to ashes and dust to dust – and with this return to the elements, I was afraid that music may manipulate an already emotional subject matter,” reflects Fox. “But when I started to hear some of Ronit’s exquisite soundscapes, I knew she had the right touch, and the music will take the film to an even deeper level.”

Fox looks to the future and giggles when he thinks of premiering ZEN & THE ART OF DYING in March of 2015 at the Byron Bay International Film Festival.

“Hey, maybe I’ll meet the muse for my next film!”

What’s for certain is that Fox will continue to make surprisingly fearless films that have a profound impact on peoples’ lives.Terence_J._Murnin_Photo.jpg
