It's that time of year, folks, where the nights get longer and the days a little more crisp. What better way to start off a season of festivity than by attending a show by our very own Advisory Board member, Robert Kraft! Let's make sure we have a great Crimson showing for this long-time supporter of Harvardwood and all-around fantastic musician. Big thanks to all of the Harvardwood members that volunteered for and attended "China's Entertainment Industry: The Next Chapter" in October. It was a magical Harvardwood evening in the elegant setting of the Beverly Hilton. And lastly, how about this for a timely piece of advice - don't forget to set your clocks back this Saturday night!

Featured Member Posting: Program Officer with the Massachusetts Cultural Council - Boston
The Massachusetts Cultural Council is seeking a Program Officer to provide leadership in the administration of the MCC's Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program, which supports cultural activities in all 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. This is one of the largest grassroots programs of its kind in the United States. The LCC program distributes $2.6 million to 329 local cultural councils annually to support programming in the arts, interpretive sciences, and humanities for the purpose of providing cultural access to all segments of the state's population. The Program Officer will serve as the primary contact for approximately 105 local cultural councils. In working with these councils, the Program Officer must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, successfully build relationships with constituents, offer high levels of customer service, diplomatically handle sensitive situations, and respond to constituent requests while meeting other important deadlines... Winners of the Harvardwood Writers' Competition to be announced in the coming weeks!
The wait is nearly over! The judges of the Harvardwood Writers' Competition (HWC) have been working hard to select this year's winners, and we'll be announcing the names of these talented writers in early November. The HWC was founded in 2006 and includes three categories in which winners will be announced: 1) Feature screenplays (90-120 pp., all genres); 2) Television pilots (30-min and 60-min, all genres); and 3) One-act plays (40-min maximum, no minimum). First-place writers are receiving a cash award and free admission to the 2013-14 Harvardwood Writers’ Program. So stay tuned over the coming weeks for the HWC 2013 winners' announcement!
Harvardwood Publishing & the Harvard Review releasing a new anthology (December 2013)
As part of its plans to expand its activities, Harvardwood Publishing has teamed up with the Harvard Review to publish a new anthology: The Best of the Harvard Review. The first anthology will be published in December 2013 and will include writings from Seamus Heaney, Nan Le, Joyce Carol Oates, John Ashbury and David Foster Wallace. Launches will take place in Boston, New York and Los Angeles. HWP plans to publish several anthologies a year that will include famous names and emerging writers from the West Coast… For more information, please [email protected].

Event Recap - China's Entertainment Industry: The Next Chapter (October 19, 2013)
On October 19th, Harvardwood and the Beijing International Screenwriting Competition hosted a panel discussion and awards ceremony that brought out over 125 attendees to the Beverly Hilton! We'd like to express our gratitude to the Beijing International Screenwriting Competition, Ameriprise Financial, and the Beverly Hilton for making China's Entertainment Industry: The Next Chapter such a success. And of course, we're grateful to our guest panelists for participating in the discussion, and to all of the Harvardwood Board Members and volunteers who pitched in to make sure the event went smoothly. A Special Harvardwood Invite to: A Night with Harvardwood Advisory Board Member Robert Kraft - Nov. 5th
On Tuesday, November 5th, award-winning composer and musician Robert Kraft will perform to a sold-out crowd at Largo at the Coronet, celebrating the release of the Robert Kraft Boxed Set and the never-before-released Robert Kraft Live at Town Hall, NYC 1980. Robert will play the piano, sing songs and tell stories covering his colorful and exciting career.
Thirty years ago, Robert Kraft was a mainstay of the New York nightclub scene, performing sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall, Town Hall and the Bottom Line, and recording 4 albums between 1979-1985. All 4 albums, plus a recorded live performance, will be re-released on October 23, 2013.
In the '80s, Kraft moved to Los Angeles to score films and produce soundtracks, earning Academy Award, Grammy, and Golden Globe nominations for his songwriting and producing. In the '90s, he put his career as an artist and songwriter on hold, becoming the President of Fox Music in Los Angeles for the next two decades, where he was responsible for the music from over 300 films, including THE LITTLE MERMAID, TITANIC, MOULIN ROUGE, BLACK SWAN, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, and GARDEN STATE.
Reviewing a 1980 show at New York's legendary Bottom Line, the New York Times's reviewer, Stephen Holden, described Mr. Kraft as "an endearingly quirky cult figure who comes very close to embodying an archetype of pop elegance."
Industry Successes...
This past October, Kelley Nicole took her multi-media stage presentation, SHATTERED GLASS, on the road to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness month. She had two successful shows at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and the University of Minnesota. SHATTERED GLASS features original music from Kelley Nicole, as well as poetic narrative, visual art, and more. Learn more about it at www.shatteredglassshow.com. And as if she weren't busy enough, she has taken on the exciting position of Executive Director for the LA Chapter of The Recording Academy (the org that puts on the GRAMMYs). That's right – she's smack dab in the middle of the music industry, a job that clearly had her name on it!
MI CORAZON was a finalist in the NBC-Universal Short Cuts Festival. The dramatic short film is the work of several Harvard College classmates who graduated in 2008: Marielle Woods (Director), Jason Lazarcheck (Writer), and Jesse Wiener (Composer). On October 23rd at the Directors Guild of America, members of the Harvardwood community came to support MI CORAZON at the 8th Annual NBC-Universal Short Cuts Festival. The film was one of 8 finalists selected from over 1400 submissions. Actress Marise Alvarez was nominated for a Best Actor award. Woods, Lazarcheck, and Erin Krozek (Producer) will receive announcements in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Past festivals: Montreal World Film Festival, LA ShortsFest, Big Bear Lake Int'l Film Festival, New Jersey Film Festival, Atlanta Shortsfest, San Jose Int'l Short Film Festival. Come see Kiran Deol '06 perform standup on one of Los Angeles's premiere new shows, "Put Your Hands Together," hosted by Cameron Esposito onTuesday, November 5th at 8pm at UCB in LA (5919 Franklin Avenue LA CA 90028). Tickets are $5; the lineups are terrific, and every week the show sells out. So if you're thumb twiddling, come through!
Karen-Eileen Gordon '86 had a blast improvising streams of curse words and dialogue in Mexican Spanglish, and brought several Mexican-American video game characters to life in the smash-hit Take-Two Interactive/Rockstar Games project, GRAND THEFT AUTO 5. The game shattered records when it broke the billion dollar mark in sales within its first three days after release this September. Additionally, Gordon stars in the indie comedy feature A FREE BIRD, soon to be shown on 800 college campuses throughout the U.S. via distributor Hogan Communications. Gordon is TAMMY, a southern hurricane-in-a-jar of a woman, attempting to navigate the modern worlds of love, work and "doing the right thing" with hilarious consequences. James P. Connolly '88 presents the 4th Annual Veteran’s Day Benefit Comedy Show, "Cocktails & Camouflage”, Sunday Nov 10th at 7PM. at Flappers Comedy Club, in Burbank CA. The event will raise funds for the non-profit group Veterans in Film & Television (VFT). Member Profile: Nell Scovell '82 - writer, producer, director, and co-author of LEAN IN

Nell Scovell (AB 82) is a true Renaissance woman: comedy writer, magazine writer, blogger, producer, director—and most recently, co-writer of Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In.
When asked how she feels about being known as a feminist comedy writer, Scovell grins. "Well, it’s only recently that I came out as a woman.”
Funnily—and appropriately—enough, Scovell was put in touch with Sandberg through Facebook, which she joined in 2006 at her sister’s request to check out her niece’s activities on the then-new(ish) social networking site.
"I loved Facebook immediately as a way to connect to people, and one of the people I reconnected with was Elliot Schrage, who was a year ahead of me in Elliot House.”
Schrage is Vice President of Communications and Public Policy at Facebook, and he asked Scovell whether she had seen Sandberg’s well-known TED talk.
"Seen it? I’d memorized it! I thought it was incredible, and it was the backbone for Lean In,” says Scovell. Schrage asked her whether she’d be interested in working with Sandberg as her speechwriter.
"I’d always written for TV, but when you’re writing speeches for Murphy Brown, it’s not that different from speeches for Sheryl Sandberg. It’s about capturing someone’s voice, attitude, and point of view—only it’s a real person.”
Co-writing Lean In naturally followed the speechwriting and was a true collaboration between the two who exchanged more than 2000 emails in nine months. The result was a best-selling book that urges women to lean in to their careers and men to lean in to their families.
The message of Lean In resonates strongly with Scovell because of her creative experiences in film and television, especially late-night television.
"I had a similar awakening as Sheryl; we grew up thinking the problem [of sexism] had been solved, that we could do anything that we wanted. Along the way, I discovered that wasn’t completely true and gender still played a part in the workplace. I assumed things would get better, and then one day someone pointed out there were exactly zero female writers working on the three biggest late-night television shows. That was really disheartening.”
Scovell knows what she’s talking about: in 1990, she became the second female writer hired by the Late Show with David Letterman. She relocated from Los Angeles, where she’d already received a significant amount of writing work, and returned to New York. After half a year, Scovell quit the show for reasons she details in a widely read Vanity Fair article about her experience with Letterman.
Back in Los Angeles, Scovell returned to writing and producing for Coachand Murphy Brown, continuing the momentum she’d gained in Hollywood since her first foray into TV writing.
Originally, Scovell did not intend to be a television writer—or even a writer. She entered Harvard as a pre-med student with the aim of becoming a surgeon.
"Now, when I speak at high schools, I always tell the kids, ‘Don’t follow your dreams; follow your talents … because my dreams were way off.”
During her first semester at Harvard, Scovell decided to try sports writing on The Crimson. "Sportswriting offered a way to be part of journalism but also encouraged writers to be creative and funny. On the sports page, you’re expected to not just report the news, but be poetic, and emotional, and all that fun stuff.”
Raised in Newton, Massachusetts with a father who was a "sports nut,” Scovell was more than familiar with the Bruins, the Celtics, and the Red Sox. Sports writing came naturally to her, and by sophomore year at Harvard, she was The Crimson’s associate sports editor. By senior year, she was covering high school sports for The Boston Globe. She wrote about that experience for Grantland.
After college, she pursued her interest in journalism and moved to New York City, where she was the first staff writer hired at Spy magazine. After one year there, Tina Brown hired her to write for Vanity Fair, but that initial Spy connection proved fateful. A chance encounter with her old Spyeditor got Scovell thinking about writing for television.
"My old Spy editor said to me, ‘You know, Nell, I don’t mean this as an insult…but I think you could write for television.’”
Scovell quickly clarifies, "Today, college students can major in television writing at NYU, but back in the mid-80s, it was just starting to be something that an East Coast person would even consider.”
So Scovell wrote a spec for It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and sent it to a couple of story editors who were friends of a friend. Her contacts passed along her spec to their bosses, who bought it. Her first staff job was as story editor on the last season of Newhart. In fact, one of Scovell’s jokes is featured in the final episode of that series—an episode considered to be among the best series finales in TV history.
In 1996, Scovell was approached by ABC about creating Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.Itpremiered with an astonishing 18 million viewers and went on to surpass the network’s expectations in popularity.
In addition to creating Sabrina, Scovell has been staffed on numerous excellent television series, and her writing credits include The Simpsons,Charmed, Monk, and NCIS. She also co-wrote "Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves,” the third movie in the Disney franchise.
Perhaps her knowledge and familiarity with sports prepared her for a career in TV writing, which she describes as "a team sport.”
"You sit in a room where people are playing off each other. Someone says something and someone else makes it even funnier and someone makes that line even funnier and then comes up with the next line—it’s collaborative. I like feeding off that energy. Every show is different, every room is different, and what keeps it interesting is always feeling like you’re learning.”
Given her extensive experience as a writer and executive producer, Scovell had little trouble learning how to be a director for two films,Hayley Wagner, Star (Showtime, 1999) and It Was One of Us (Lifetime, 2007).
"If you’re an executive producer on a TV show, you’re spending a lot of time on set, you’re spending a lot of time with the director, and you’re actually looking at the video screens. The hardest part of switching to director when you’re a writer,” concedes Scovell, "is that as a writer, you hear lines in your head, but then actors are hired who may or may not deliver them that way.”
Perhaps Scovell’s ability to slip on the director’s hat so easily stems from her understanding of the fundamental difference between television and film.
"Movies are to books what television shows are to magazines. I love that experience when you don’t stop for advertisements in the middle of your creativity. You have that chance to get inside someone’s head, create a world, and lead them through it. TV doesn’t do that: TV’s social, TV’s something to talk about.”
Although Scovell welcomes future opportunities to direct again, her ultimate love is comedy writing—especially character comedy—for many reasons.
"There’s no better job on the planet: you’re sitting in a room with people who are getting paid to make each other laugh,” says Scovell. "I was the middle of five kids and we used to tease each other mercilessly, and that was the best training for being in a comedy writers’ room I could ever ask for. I definitely had a tough skin and that helped.”
According to Scovell, a tough skin and persistence are necessary to be successful in Hollywood. Even today, her own success surprises her. In answer to whether her robust writing career has been unexpected, Scovell responds with an immediate yes.
"I always kept writing for magazines because that was my backup plan. Hollywood seemed ephemeral. Everything in my career has been unplanned…and it still isn’t planned. That can make it scary. I’ve been out of work and convinced I was done, but you keep churning out spec scripts, you keep checking in with your agent … eventually, it will be over, but so far, something’s always popped up.”
That tenuous stability and the constant challenges presented by comedy writing are also breeding grounds for great ideas.
"Comedy is subjective. You don’t know how an audience will react to a joke, and that’s part of what’s so exciting. The inspiration I get is just from the craziness and hypocrisy of life—the good times slamming into the bad times, the emotional whiplash that we all feel.”
For now, however, Scovell is still churning out spec scripts, opportunities are still popping up, and the good times are still rolling.
