Ethan Cohen Gallery is delighted to announce its inaugural exhibition in Los Angeles. Our show, Reality Check, features a selection of seven top artists who embody the gallery's commitment to critical global issues.

Aboudia, the leading African painter who will represent the Ivory Coast in this year’s Venice Biennale, depicts fevered urban dreamscapes of lost streets haunted by childlike spirits. From a young age, Aboudia spent much of his youth living on the streets of Abidjan. He has recently opened his foundation which supports fellow artists and the children in his community, giving them access to health, education, encouragement, and resources for a more hopeful future.

Ai Weiwei is renowned for making strong aesthetic statements that resonate with timely phenomena across today’s geopolitical world. From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. In this show, we will be exhibiting one of Ai’s early line drawings.

Thomas Deininger is a Rhode Island-based artist who creates mind-bending assemblage-based sculptures of animals and insects out of the very materials that threaten them. Deininger’s work synthesizes the consumer society's capacity for both destruction and creation.

Edwin Schlossberg, a physicist and top pioneer in the field of interactive art, is a renowned artist and poet whose practice carries the written word into the realm of visual art. His two recent paintings made during the Covid emergency on view are quasi-landscape abstractions fraught with the urgency of the climate crisis.

 
Ron English is a contemporary pop artist and painter who takes ideas of brand images and cultural icons and twists them into new contexts that question our understanding of the branded world around us. English’s art appropriates classic icons to tell hard truths.

Victor Ekpuk uses abstract symbols to create his own language inspired by his Nigerian ancestors. Ekpuk deploys the pictorial tradition of his own culture as commentary on the diaspora of African peoples.  By juxtaposing ancient ancestral symbols on consumer-society images that resonate with contemporary life, his art bridges polarities of time and culture. In his art idiom we detect inspirations for Keith Haring and even early modernists such as Picasso and Braque.  

Yigal Ozeri, the celebrated hyper-realist Israeli painter, creates large-scale portraits of visionaries who had the courage to address our collective faults publicly and present shared horizons of hope.
